Aphrodisias Ancient City, located within the borders of Geyre District of Karacasu district of Aydın province, is located on a plateau about 600 meters above sea level in the fertile valley formed by Dandalaz (Morsynus) Stream, which is a tributary of Menderes (Meander) River. The biggest source of wealth of the city, which was fed by the natural features of the river basin in which it is located, provided marble quarries located in the skirts of Babadağ in the north of the city.
Aphrodisias, whose settlement date dates back to the middle of the 5th millennium BC, was a small village in the 6th century BC, while it gained the status of a city state (police) during the busy urbanization period in the Menderes Valley in the 2nd century BC. Aphrodisias, who had close ties with Rome in the 1st century BC, said by Octavian, who later took the title of Augustus as the Roman Emperor, "I chose this city from all over Asia." and it started to develop rapidly after the Roman Senate was granted privileges such as tax exemption and autonomy in 39 BC.
The archaeological significance of Aphrodisias comes from the exceptionally well preserved structures and associated reliefs and inscriptions that reveal an intense exchange of ideas and values from the Late Hellenistic Period to the Roman and Byzantine periods. Aphrodisias, MS 1.-5. He has trained sculptors who have gained a great reputation in the entire Mediterranean world between the centuries and who have their signature all over the Empire, especially Rome. The fact that marble quarries are rarely close to the city is an important reason for Aphrodisias to become a high quality production center for marble sculpture art. Thanks to this feature, it became one of the cities in the Asian State of the Roman Empire that provided research and understanding in all aspects of the marble art and architecture of the period. It is known that the Aphrodite sanctuary, which gave the city its name and played an important role in the development of urban identity, and the original Aphrodite cult in the city, also affected a large area in the Mediterranean Basin.
Due to these features, Aphrodisias Ancient City is about 2-3 km. It was registered to the World Heritage List in 2017 with the ancient marble quarries located in the northeast.
